I have to recommend the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS. ($199 at Amazon) It has one feature that other brands do not, an optical viewfinder in addition to the LCD. LCD viewfinders just don’t work well in broad daylight. If you are going to take pictures outdoors, you should consider getting a camera with an optical viewfinder. It comes in red, black, silver or gold.

I wouldn’t touch a Kodak with a long pole – so many Kodak owners (on YA and other places) are unhappy with theirs.
It seems Kodak and Vivitar are nearly guaranteed to cause you grief.
I’d stick with either Canon or Nikon.
